Handshake for Students

Handshake is a job search and networking tool geared towards early career students seeking internships and full-time roles. Additionally, all major Career Fairs are posted and managed on Handshake.

All students are provided with a Handshake account when they are enrolled at Kean University. We strongly encourage students to update and personalize their profiles as employers may use this tool to identify talent for their open positions.

Update Your Handshake Profile:

Students can initiate their Handshake profile by entering their @kean.edu email address. If using a personal email address, your activation will not be approved!! To complete the registration process, complete the following:

  • Name
  • Major
  • Graduation Year
  • Contact Information – please list both a kean.edu and personal email address!!!!
  • All previous employment and brief description as to what you did in the role

Once an account has been updated and created, students can utilize the Job Search feature to identify roles, from internship to full time opportunities. Individuals will then be able apply for jobs directly through Handshake.

Internship Submissions in Handshake

Students who are looking to complete an internship for credit must submit a Handshake Experience.

  1. Log in to Handshake at https://kean.joinhandshake.com/login
  2. Navigate to the “Experiences” section on the left-hand menu.
  3. Click on “Add Experience” and fill in the required details.( Select your major’s template when completing the experience submission)
  4. Submit your experience for approval.

The agreement that you submit in Handshake will be emailed to the supervisor you list in the agreement at the internship site.  Managers need to follow the email prompts (the email will come directly from Handshake) and approve the agreement.  If they do not approve this agreement, it does not move forward in the process for finalization to receive academic credit.

What to expect when internship agreement is finalized:

  • After your internship agreement has been finalized, you should see it reflected in your Student Planning.
  • You should also see a course appear in Canvas.
  • You will be expected to submit weekly assignments in Canvas
  • You will need to complete a Pre-Assessment prior to starting internship (posted in Canvas).
  • You will need to complete a Post-Assessment at the completion of internship (posted in Canvas).
  • Your supervisor will be asked to complete a final evaluation, which will be emailed to them directly.

IMPORTANT: Once you see your internship registered in your student planning it is important to remember this is a course.  If you decide to not complete your internship, you will need to withdraw from the course using the same deadlines and protocols that you would for any other course and email your internship advisor immediately. Failure to do so may result in not receiving credit for the engagement.
