Introduction

The Department of Services for Children, Youth and their Families’ (The Delaware Children’s Department) primary responsibility is to provide and manage a range of services for children who have experienced abandonment, abuse, adjudication, mental illness, neglect, or substance abuse. Summary Statement

The Intern/Extern supports youth, families, and interdisciplinary teams by assisting in the delivery of evidence-based behavioral health services. This role provides opportunities for hands-on experience in clinical assessment, treatment planning, and direct service delivery while working under the supervision of licensed professionals.

Location of Internship: Silver Lake Treatment Center, 493 East Main Street, Middletown, DE 19709

Learning Objectives:

Gain practical experience in clinical documentation, assessment, and treatment planning.

Develop communication and counseling skills within individual, family, and group therapy contexts.

Understand multidisciplinary collaboration and behavioral health service coordination.

Learn professional standards and responsibilities associated with clinical supervision and case management.

Essential Functions

Key Responsibilities:

Collaborates with youth, families, and formal or informal support networks to gather information for service planning and connection to behavioral health resources.

Assists in conducting ongoing clinical assessments and providing treatment interventions.

Supports the development and implementation of individualized treatment plans based on the needs of children, youth, and their families.

Participates in and may help facilitate individual, family, and group therapy sessions under supervision.

Monitors client progress and recommends appropriate strategies to promote continued functional and emotional improvement.

Prepares and maintains accurate clinical documentation, including progress notes, summaries, and reports.

Attends and contributes to multidisciplinary team meetings to coordinate care and ensure appropriate behavioral health service planning.

Observes and learns about supervisory and administrative responsibilities, including planning, directing, and evaluating staff work and providing technical guidance.

Adheres to all ethical, professional, and confidentiality standards in accordance with agency policies and applicable regulations.

Job Requirements:

Candidate Qualifications:

1. Within two months of graduation or Possession of a Master’s degree or higher in Behavioral or Social Science or related field. Working towards licensure hours with the intent to be licensed within 1 year with a Delaware clinical license that allows for independent practice, e.g., Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), Licensed Professional Counselor-Mental Health (LPC-MH), Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT), or Psychologist.

2. Currently seeking an externship to apply academic knowledge and practical work experience within a related degree field.

3. One year of clinical experience working with children or adolescents

4. One year of experience with clinical documentation, including narrative report writing

5. Possession of a valid driver’s license (not suspended, revoked or canceled, or disqualified from driving)
