Internship Opportunities
College-credit internships across the Staten Island FerryHawks organization
The Staten Island FerryHawks offer hands-on, college-credit internships across the organization. Each internship is an educational training experience, offered in conjunction with the student’s school, in which the intern gains practical, hands-on experience in their chosen area of study and learns how a professional baseball team operates, under staff supervision. It is experience students could not get anywhere else. Roles are grouped by department below.
EDUCATIONAL NATURE AND ACADEMIC CREDIT
These are educational internships, not jobs. Each is offered only for academic credit, arranged through the intern’s own college or university and in accordance with that school’s rules for earning credit; the FerryHawks coordinate with the school. Interns train and learn under the supervision of the staff member they report to; staff lead and remain responsible for the club’s work. Interns do not displace regular employees in any fashion, are not employees for minimum wage or overtime purposes, are not guaranteed employment at the end of the internship, are free to pursue other opportunities in the field, and receive no employee benefits. Each intern signs an agreement reflecting these terms before starting.
HOW THE PROGRAM WORKS
The program is built to give interns a real, hands-on look at how a professional baseball organization operates:
• Orientation: The program begins with a one-day orientation where interns meet the staff, get to know one another, and are introduced to how the program works.
• Weekly: Each week, interns are paired directly with the staff member they report to and learn their area by observing and assisting.
• Department sessions: Once a week, typically on a Monday or Friday, interns attend a one-hour session with a different department to learn what that department does and how it operates.
• Paperwork and coordination: The supervisor of each intern manages any internship paperwork and coordinates with the intern’s school and with the staff member serving as the overall internship program coordinator.
• End-of-term report: At the end of each term, interns write a report on what they did, what they learned, and their experience, both good and bad, so the club can continue to improve the program.
